Third win on the bounce for the Couer sees the title push back on. Playin Old Xavs a week after we took their unbeaten record in a 6 2 drubbing, we knew they were going to be looking to put the record straight as soon as possible. On our arrival we were a bit late due to Gary insisting showing the team John Lennons house, but after a tour of the local area, we were greeted by Old Xavs already changed and doing proper warm ups (that made it a bit sweeter at the end of the game)
With fat cat out and AK on babysitting duty Branners took up the net and I went back into midfield playing the normal 451 leaving the silver fox to lead the line on his own.
As normal this season we started off slow and a bit nervy not being able to get the ball down and play, Old Xavs had some young players who passed and moved well but didnt really cut us open. Once the midfield had got a grip on the Old Xavs set up we began to mark them out the game and started to support Danny.
The first chance was ball nicely played over the top to Danny who ran onto it and lobbed the keeper beautifully into the net only for the ref to rule offside. Never offside and we should have been 1 nil up.
It wasnt long before we weere in the lead, Danny did great to get on the end of a lovely through ball and slotted neatly past the Old Xavs keeper. Not long after his first goal Danny did great to get behind the Old Xavs defence again and rounded the keeper but unable to get the ball under control, Danny almost scooped the ball to everyones disbelief wide of the empty goal.
The game remained tight but I cant remember in the first half Old Xavs causing our cat to save anything. With all the play in the first half seeming to come down our left Richie and Gary did great to stop any Old Xavs possesion turning to anything.
Half time 0 - 1
The second half started like the first ended, tight and scrappy at times. The only real scare of the game came as we got caught in sixes and sevens at the back which enabled an Old Xavs midfielder some space and from the six yard box blasted it over the bar, this give us a shot in the arm we needed and we dug in again.
Peter who never stopped running and throwing in his hollywood tackles and JB trying to get it down and play continued to cause The Old Xavs midfield problems, both of them playing some lovely balls to Danny. But with Old Xavs getting onto most things going through "Ravanelli" they defended well and we continued to look for the goal to give us the insurance we needed.
JB had a great chance when Danny passed the ball past the last defender across the goal but with JB running onto it , he swiped at the ball and landed on his arse, im sure Danny wont remind him of this in work.
I went off for Fran, who went to the right and Cav came into the middle.
Up step Richie Hughes! With Richie being quieter than normal in both games he has struggled to destroy Old Xavs with his pace like he has in other games, but he managed to find some space and Danny played a ball back to him which sat up well and he smashed it and it dipped low to the keepers right. The keeper didnt even move and with Richie hitting it from 30 yards out he really knocked Old Xavs for six, great goal.
Within a minute we made it 3, Robbie Phillips and Peter did a one two and Robbie just inside their half played a lovely ball to Danny which he ran onto and slotted great past the keeper.
The defence continued to give Old Xavs nothing and with 5 minutes to go an Old Xavs attacker was in a great position to shoot as he got his shot off Cav did great to throw himself iinto a sliding tackle completely blocking the shot and clearing it. A great tackle and it showed how committed everyone was to getting a clean sheet.
Chris and Dave organised the defence great with cockney Rob and Gaz giving nothing down the flanks to the Old Xavs wingers. Danny picked up an ankle injury which we are all hoping isnt anything serious, so in a like for like swap Martin came on for him. Martins slimming pills have made him lose 4 pounds this week so with his lighter frame asked to go on the wing, Fran pushed upfront.
The cat pulled off 2 great saves to keep a clean sheet the fat cat would have been proud of.
We did well to control the game and see it out, the only other thing of note was a brillant dive by Martin, when the 3 stone Old Xavs winger CRASHED into him, Martin went down like a true pro winning the free kick.
Another great performance and a well deserved clean sheet, JB starting to find his range in the middle, some lovely through balls, Peters running and energy top draw with Richie and Cav working the flanks well, the defence looking stronger and tighter each game with the normal threat of what Danny offers, the team is looking good.
With a long way to go still, not many teams will cope with us if we continue to play like that well in lads.
TWAT OF THE MATCH... With so many good performances Richie wins the award this week for insisting on taking the throws when we needed him on the end of the throws, sorry Richie struggling this week!
