A new season and a massive change in playing personel. Andy Rannard was back from the Vets, joined by brother Mark and further newcomers, James Stephen, Chris Woodhall and Tal joining from the fourths. Si had been forced back between the sticks after Kev had managed to get himself a six month ban in the dying seconds of last season.
The season started brilliantly with Chris heading in a Mick Taylor corner at the back stick to give Coeur the lead inside the opening 5 minutes. Convocation then pressed forward only to see their advances met by a stern Coeur rearguard.
After 15 minutes the Convocation forward darted inside of Andy Rannard and Si raced from his line to dive at his feet and make the block. The ball was hoofed to safety when it became apparent that Si was in cloud-cuckoo land. Andy quickly summoned Doyley, who brought the first and made a fantastic job of stemming the blood that was flowing from Si's ear. Patched up, Si was then led from the pitch to go and have his ear looked at by professional ear-fixers.
Baxi, heroically donned the gloves and stepped between the posts. Minutes later Coeur had a chance to double their lead as Andy Rannard escaped down the right and crossed the ball into the box. One of the Convocation defenders blocked the ball with his hand and Coeur were awarded a spot kick. The shy and retiring Mick Taylor grabbed the ball, yet was unable to convert the penalty.
Convocation then came back into the game scoring 3 times without reply, after some impromptu changes from the Coeur touchline. Fortunately for Coeur Chris was in a goalscoring mood and brilliantly controlled Joe Carragher's free kick before firing home from 20 yards. Not long before the end Chris completed his hat-trick bursting clear, flicking the ball over the keeper, then running round him and heading it into the empty net.
A reasonable start to the season, coming back from 3-1 to salvage a point. Baxi performed heroics in goal as well as Si was taken, by Liam Doyle, to Old Swan walk in centre where two nurses manages to fix his ear with 13 stitches, a couple of steri-stips and a bottle of glue.
