Quarter finals of the esteemed GRIMSHAW CUP, a win today and the team go into their third consecutive semi final.
We started off how we played most of the game a bit below par and just doing enough to keep Alsop from worrying us. We controlled the game and early on Danny won a penalty clipped by an Alsop player to shouts from their manager that he didnt mean to foul him (unbelieveably the pen was given even though he didnt mean to foul him). Danny dispatched it to the keepers left as he dived the other way. This seemed to knock the stuffing out of Alsop but maybe they did have more of the play in the first half but didnt do anything with it.
Even though I was watching I am struggling to recall many great chances, probably Danny getting into good positions and then passing will stick with me for this game, ive never seen Danny pass so much. Dannys passes led to Peter having a couple of shots but scuffing them wide and Chris having one air shot and a scuffed effort. Richie had a few runs but didnt always have a shot but when he did was unable to trouble the keeper. But I would say on another day we would have been 5 - 0 up with these chances we just didnt take them. I think the surprise of Danny passing threw everyone, lets hope we can build on this differnt type of play.
Within the first half Neil didnt have much to do but he came out twice to put some great tackles in and also saved well from an Alsop free kick which he pushed wide, so at this level a clean sheet isnt something you expect every week but well done Neil in his part of giving us one today.
half time 0 - 1
Second half started off probably a bit worse with Alsop pushing having a couple of half chances, but again an early goal from Danny secured the win, a flick on from a corner by HD fell to Danny at the far post who had all the time in the world to dispatch the ball nicely.
I then came on for MBFGW and Gary went to right back and Peter Centre half, Tal come on straight swap for Franster. The game really was cancelled out with no outstanding chances springing to mind. Richie had a bit of joy down the left when we broke but I felt our defence from start to finish played well giving Alsop nothing.
Pad was excellent as normal winning some great headers and tackles with Sean, Gary and MBFGW when playing full back showng for the ball and giving options to the midfield.
I think in a game in which we did what we needed to do and a clean sheet, it shows how far we have come when some were disappointed with the result. It was a great result boys well done everyone, with Waterloo beating Richmond, Roby beating Kingsford and Old Caths likely to be there the semi final will be tough, but the way we are playing for one another I dont fear anyone.
Congratulations gents enjoy the week off, even the team photo looks professional after several years of not even organising that right, as I sit here in my spandex and Sacre Couer love eggs up my bum (Pad me lent me his after Neil ate mine thinking they were malteasers) I say I love you all lets do the double boys!
Ps no one has owned up giving me half a fiver as their subs, if I dont get a cough out of one you lot im dropping Danny so come on wheres the rest of the fiver? Peters money is on rusty door hinge Mortimor
