Having got their season back on track last week after a couple of poor results, Coeur traveled to Mossley Hill who had also had a decent start to the season and sat top of the second division at the start of play. Coeur arrived at Mossley Hill welcoming back Mally Harper from injury, who took his place on the bench alongside Andy Blackburn. Andy Rannard also returned to the starting line up after missing last week due to religious commitments.
Having got changed in the pleasant confines of Mossley Hill Athletic Club, Coeur then took a 5 minute walk over the road and through the leafy surroundings of Sudbury playing fields. Unfortunately on reaching the pitch Coeur found that it was far from the standard of the changing rooms, and left them wishing they had brought their ropes and crampons to tackle the left to right slope of the pitch.
Coeur realised that this game held massive importance if they had aspirations on challenging for promotion this season, and new it was going to be difficult on an undulating pitch with long grass across most of it. The game proved lively and Coeur managed to develop and early foothold in the game, if not on the pitch. Craig Burns and Mick Kennedy were proving to be a handful for Mossley Hill's defence and again it was the combination of the pair that led to Coeur taking the lead. Craig turned a couple of defenders inside out on the left wing before delivering a dangerous ball into the area. Mick Kennedy showed all his goal poaching abilities by sneaking in front of the defender to divert the ball home on the volley. Coeur had several more chances in the first half, firstly Mike Smith produced one of his regular bursts from the back playing a sumptuous 1 - 2 and scampering clear of the Mossley Hill defence only to be foiled by a great save by the keeper. Craig Burns was next to be denied by the keeper seeing a smart drive palmed around the post. Mossley Hill had only one shot on goal after Mick Carr was unfortunate to stumble on the dodgy pitch, fortunately the shot was wide of the post. Craig Burns and Mick Kennedy were both denied by excellent saves by the keeper as Coeur went into the break leading 1 - 0 when truthfully it should have been more.
Half Time 1 - 0
Coeur had been dominant in the first half and came out expecting to seal the game in the second half. Again the keeper for Mossley Hill was keeping them in it as Coeur attacked at will. Craig Burns was terrorising the Mossley Hill defence and Mick Kennedy was looking good for a second goal. Indeed it was Mick who extended Coeur's lead, and in effect killed the game off. Gav Scott played perfect slide rule pass into ther path of Mick who sprung the offside trap, then 20 yards out prodded the ball past the onrushing keeper towards the empty net. He followed the ball in, watching it run over the line, so he could later claim in The Crosby that he had scored "A 20 yarder and make sure that goes in the report". With a 2 - 0 lead and Mossley Hill failing to extend Coeur's non-permeable defence, Mick Kennedy saw the opportunity to rest his fragile hamstrings. Mally Harper came on to replace him and had a big impact on the game. On a big pitch it was a godsend to have the energy and eagerness of Mally Harper coming into the game. Within minutes he had caused enough mayhem in the Mossley Hill ranks to force them to concede possession, before threading a delightful little through ball into the path of Craig Burns. Craig, having seen the keeper spread himself well to make 3 or 4 top draw 1 on 1 saves already, sold the keeper a dummy and dragged the ball past him before rolling it into the empty net. Andy Blackburn was then brought on to replace Gav Scott who had got through a lot of work on an energy sapping pitch. With the game in the bag Mossley Hill were afforded more possession with Coeur happy to pick them off on the break. Neil Shelley was orchestrating the defence superbly, with Michael Carr, Andy Rannard and Mike Smith in imperious form alongside him. Coeur again went close on a number of occasions but couldn't find a fourth goal which would have reflected there dominance more accurately.
An excellent performance against a Mossley Hill side who have started the season quite well, although on this showing it should be Coeur rather than them who finish nearer the top of the 2nd division this season.
