Sacre Coeur felt the need to pick up all 3 points after Gateacre ended their 7 match winning streak in the league two weeks earlier. A solid victory in the Senior Shield had been obtained since the Gateacre match, with Quarry Bank from the 2 nd division having been disposed of 2 – 0.
Coeur felt that a victory could be obtained here, but knew that they would have to work hard against a Bootleians side that had held out for 80 minutes earlier in the season, only to lose 1 – 0. Bootleians also had a lively forward line, that without being prolific had scored in every game other than the afore mentioned Coeur victory.
Coeur started the game well and were dominating the possession, a series of intricate passing, supported by excellent movement, left Bootleians fighting a rearguard action. It was no surprise then that Darren Carr opened the scoring for Coeur with a sweet strike from 15 yards. The first half continued in a similar manner and despite the protestations from Bootleians mouthy forward that “These are Sh*t, let's get stuck into them” Coeur continued pressing Bootleians back into their own half.
The second half saw Coeur start slowly and Bootleians had a few long range pot-shots, none of which seriously troubled Si Furlong in goal. After 10 minutes Coeur sprung into action and Darren Carr netted his second of the game with a sweet looping header into the far corner of the Bootleians net.
Coeur had become dominant at this stage and the midfield trio of Darren Carr, Neil Shelley and Alan Hulthen were having a field day. Alan Hulthen and Mike Smith were running Bootleians left hand side ragged, producing several incisive runs and dangerous crosses from the by-line.
It was a sublime finish from Craig Burns who put the result of the match beyond any doubt, chipping the ball delicately over the onrushing keeper and into the back of the net.
The fourth goal was met with eclectic delight, if more so by the scorer Dave Looby than anyone else. Dave, having only returned from a four month injury layoff and yet to make an impression on his tally of 8 from last season, forced the ball home from close range.
Coeur played some excellent football during this match and drew admiring glances from spectators of the adjacent 1 st division match. With only four league games left this season, Coeur now need to push on and ensure that this year the title becomes reality.
